"We have this huge Microsoft research organization that is pretty important to us as a platform holder in helping us think about what might be next. It's where Kinect came from, it's where [Cortana's] voice system came from, it's where Drivatars came from. There's a bunch of stuff in our games that have been berthed out of Microsoft research; thousands of people working there in that team. Looking at things like Oculus, Morpheus--they haven't sent me one yet--but when I think about VR and its uses in gaming I think there's a real something there."

But does the VR we've seen so far from Oculus and Sony have a chance at success outside of the hardcore, tech-savvy, and early adopters? Spencer says, "I don't think it's going to be that every game requires me to put goggles on my face in order to go play it, but ... there are real, immersive games where actually being able to completely immerse the user in the experience, both in audio and visuals, can be really compelling.

"Will it ever become mainstream? You see these bifurcations; some people are playing simple touch games where you feel like you're controlling the Death Star, and then other people are putting goggles on their face where they can feel like they're living in that world 24/7. But the big area in the middle is closer to the casual side in terms of usage."

But while Microsoft didn't have any experimental, far-off tech to show at the conference, he thinks that Sony made the right choice in revealing Morpheus this week. "Sony did a good job with Morpheus and showing it here, and talking to the developer community. Bringing out things that you're talking about, whether it's Direct X12 or it's Morpheus, is why GDC exists. People can bring out technologies that they see a future for and get feedback from the development community. This is absolutely the right kind of forum for that."

Here at the GameSpot office, the tech has generated a lot heated discussion, and we'll be exploring VR technology's current implications, as well as other developers' reactions to it, in the coming weeks.

Fri, 21 Mar 2014 19:10:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-says-vr-is-something-we-ve-been-playing-with-for-a-while/1100-6418473/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/what-we-learned-and-didn-t-from-the-new-assassin-s-creed-trailer/1100-6418472/

The announcement trailer for the next Assassin's Creed was released earlier today, and finally confirmed where the next game in Ubisoft's hit franchise will be set--revolutionary France. First, Molyneux said the God game genre does not translate well to consoles because the interface and the "free-form" nature of their worlds is tricky to manipulate using a controller. "Controllers are awful for free-form. They're very serial," he said.

That's why you see so few God games on consoles, he said.

Second, Molyneux said games like FarmVille, CityVille, and Clash of Clans have been labeled "God games," but they really aren't, he argued.

"I don't think they are God games because they're not playful enough, they're not about your world; they're about this very compartmentalized world," Molyneux said. "So I feel that Godus should be a reinvention of that game and then infusing that with the ability that all people are playing together is fresh and new and different enough."

No stranger to making lofty claims, Molyneux boasted that Godus will break new ground and do things that no game has ever done before.

"There is nothing like Godus that I have ever played before. It's not like any game that has existed before," he said. The game will offer "ultimate freedom," Molyneux said.

Also in our talk with Molyneux, he recalled the origins of the God game genre itself. He is credited with giving life to the "God game" genre with Populous, but he never thought of using that specific terminology.

"I didn't invent that genre; I stumbled across it. It was only my alcohol-soaked brain that came up with that idea. And then the press turned around and said 'Oh, this is called a God game' and I didn't set out to do it," Molyneux said.

You can watch our full interview with Molyneux below.

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly?

"As a Windows company, I appreciate what they've done."

Steam has focused on PC gaming more, in a lot of ways, than Microsoft has, Spencer said.

Also during the panel, Spencer said PC gamers can expect "more focus" from Microsoft in the PC gaming space in the time ahead. Spencer stressed that Microsoft doesn't plan to compete directly with Valve, but said "it's important to invest in [PC gaming] in a real way."

Finally, he said PC gamers will see "tier-1" initiatives for PC gaming from Microsoft beginning this summer, though he did not say more.

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced Direct X12, the latest version of the graphics API that promises major improvements for Xbox One and PC developers.

Valve is, of course, soon to become a competitor to Microsoft in the home console space with its line of Steam Machines. It was an absolute feeding frenzy. My public and private life was fair game," he said, as reported by GamesIndustry International. I went from income to no income."

Orth received death threats and some people even wished cancer upon him and his child, he said. But he's not worried about the potential for Internet threats to materialize into real-world violence. Instead, he said it's seriously sad that society has "regressed" to a point where the kind of behavior and comments sent his way are acceptable when someone has an opinion other than their own.

"Most developers don't even raise an eyebrow at this because this is the new normal. As an industry we've become desensitized to this insane behavior because it's overwhelming, ubiquitous, and unstoppable. Somehow we've devolved while moving forward, and there's no going back," he said.

Orth explained that he's seen an "us versus them" theme rise to the surface between developers and players. This negative trend has the potential to spiral even further out of control, he said.

"It's chilling," he said, recalling a quote from one developer he spoke with saying this issue "represents a total breakdown of how our industry fundamentally functions and foreshadows possible dark times ahead. Internet toxicity has the power to sh** on something beautiful and destroy it."

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly?
