It's unclear which high school Hryb graduated from or when the event will take place.

Many high schools in Connecticut get out this week.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Hryb spent more than a decade working as the director of promotions at Clear Channel for WKSS in Hartford during the '90s. WKSS is one of the better-known radio stations in Connecticut and Hryb appeared on-air earlier this year when he came to Connecticut to open the new Microsoft store at the Westfarms Mall.

Hryb is a technology and media veteran, and his product--Xbox--is no doubt played by many of those who will be in attendance during the speech. Suffice it so say, he'll have plenty of material to cover during his graduation address.

My graduation speaker was a former member of the Blue Man Group. Those similarities include the visuals, which may be due to the fact that Bungie says it didn't specifically set out to make something that looked completely different from Halo.

In an interview with GamesBeat, senior environmental artist Jason Sussman was asked about whether Bungie felt its next game had to look nothing like Halo. "That wasn't our goal," he said. "I think Chris Barrett, our art director, has talked about how we went really high fantasy at first. We wanted to branch out and do something fantastic. Then we started falling back on some of the things that we know how to do really well, merging those worlds together. We weren't trying, intentionally, to say, 'Hey, let's not make it look like this.' We just wanted to make something unique and special, not only to the players, but to ourselves. We wanted to do something new, something bigger, something different in all the right ways, but still remaining true to our foundation."

The Destiny alpha test wrapped up yesterday, and while it's prompted numerous jokes and critiques about Peter Dinklage's voice acting, the consensus is that it's an absolutely beautiful game. We've only seen it running on the PlayStation 4, but considering this is a game that will be released on last-generation consoles in addition to PS4 and Xbox One, it's an impressive achievement.

The scale and draw distance, in particular, have been lauded by those who have played the game, and it's those things that Sussman pointed to when asked about what makes the art next-gen. "It's the scale and scope of what we're doing," he responded. "The size of our environments and the amount of explorable space and the amount of A.I. in those environments, along with other players coming seamlessly in and out of those spaces. It doesn't matter if you're on a strike or playing a campaign mission or just roaming around. You're constantly going to run across other people, seamlessly coming in and out. That feels very different to me. It's not just a typical first-person shooter."

Sussman also talked up the work Bungie has done on the engine that's powering the game. "We're doing a lot of different technical things that we haven't done before," he said. "We have cloth sim on the players. We've rewritten our engine from the ground up. This is not the engine we used in the past. Every system has been amplified, from animation to the way we're lighting the environment. We're tuning in to every aspect of each next-gen console as much as possible."

Bungie has previously said that the last-generation-console versions will not be dumbed down compared to what's offered on PS4 or Xbox One, although we still don't have any real idea of what to expect on 360 or PS3. Sussman added to Bungie's past comments by saying, "We've pushed the 360 and the PS3 really far. We want to deliver, on all four consoles, the best possible experience."

Destiny is set to run at 1080p and 30 frames per second on both Xbox One and PS4, figures which Sussman confirmed to GamesBeat. Although those two will be comparable in that regard, the PlayStation versions will feature exclusive content, and the upcoming beta will launch first on those platforms on July 17.

Chris Pereira is a freelance writer for GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @TheSmokingManX

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? As the camera slowly flies around these scenes frozen in time, you soak in the mayhem: a swarm of Nazis in aggressive poses, gunfire and muzzle flashes filling the screen, and emotional civilians running for cover. You're given the impression that Enemy Front's gameplay will let you experience these dynamic moments. Yet this is a glamorized, false impression, which is all the more unfortunate given that it has been a while since we've had a notable WWII first-person shooter (not counting Wolfenstein: The New Order). It's a bad sign when loading screens are the most eye-catching parts of a game.

At first, it's easy to go along with the premise of playing an American-journalist-turned-freedom-fighter named Robert Hawkins. He's a one-man army for only a handful of missions; the rest of the time, he's either partnered with an operative or part of a large squad. And while Enemy Front follows the location-hopping flow common in many shooters, Hawkins' European tour is a believable one because it doesn't shoehorn missions in Italy, North Africa, or anywhere east of Poland. One notable setting is a colorful, sun-drenched French countryside that echoes the opening scene from Inglourious Basterds.

Given that he's a reporter, it's puzzling and laughable that the delivery of Hawkins' radio-broadcasted motivational speeches during the Warsaw Uprising is painfully flat. This poor presentation is a missed opportunity that's meant to complement the story's nonlinear structure, which, by the way, could have benefited from further exposition and context for those unfamiliar with the uprising. Moreover, Hawkins' character development feels forced; he starts as an opportunistic, news-hungry reporter on the front lines and slowly realizes there are greater goals in this war than the next big scoop. When you have something as clear-cut as a tyrannical occupation, it's hard to believe Hawkins couldn't empathize with the resistance movement right from the start.

This is a first-person shooter set in Europe during World War II, so you get to kill lots and lots of Nazis. The anticipation of killing more Nazis in subsequent chapters is one of the very few factors motivating you to keep playing Enemy Front. The most satisfying kills involve the familiar FPS tactics: killing two foes with a single bullet, banking a grenade off a wall, and pulling off multiple kills with an explosive barrel. Developer City Interactive also assumes you have some interest in playing as a sniper, since Enemy Front uses the exact same aiming system as the developer's Sniper: Ghost Warrior series, so much so that this game could have easily been rebranded as a Ghost Warrior spin-off. Despite the game's "play as you like" marketing, using the sniper is almost always the best approach.

It takes little time to be convinced that City Interactive wanted to branch out beyond the orderly objectives and methodical linearity that define Sniper: Ghost Warrior. Enemy Front's early chapters provide scant glimpses of the more ambitious ideas the studio was going for. The ability to pick a mission of your choosing made me recall the hub design of the 2009 version of Wolfenstein. A few chapters later, you have the option to send a truck downhill toward an unsuspecting squad of Nazis. These unconventional sections are Enemy Front's most intriguing features, of which there are very few.

The wide-linear design of Enemy Front might feel inspired by Crysis 2 and Dishonored, yet its levels do not encourage the same degree of stimulating improvisation due to the lack of unpredictable enemy behavior. What made dying fun in Crysis 2 was that you got to try a different strategy with each retry, resulting in new enemy reactions each time. You are nearly deprived of that feeling in Enemy Front. Because of the game's poorly laid checkpoints, dying elicits a sense of frustration and boredom at the prospect of having to retread over half a mile's worth of leveled French villages. The thought of having to kill the same 20-plus Nazis a second or third time was so unappealing that I felt no guilt running past them after subsequent respawns. This says a lot since these aren't the smartest Nazis. Sure, they're consistently keen enough to spot you if you're out in the open too long, but once they're on alert, their movements are disappointingly predictable. If you don't want to leave any survivors, you can use the classic shooter exploit of funneling enemies toward you for easy pickings.

As much as Enemy Front also wants to cater to the stealth enthusiast, sneaking in this game is typically a cumbersome ordeal. A stealth kill is often useless since the drawn-out brutality of stabbing a downed Nazi three times is five seconds too long and leaves you open to detection. It's not as the studio intended, but you're better off approaching guards from the side since melee kills are instant and you get to avoid the stealth kill prompt. The contrast between the two methods is baffling.

The inclination to run past entire squads of Nazis is partially related to the game's lack of play-style incentives. Yes, many great shooters don't have progression rewards, but it doesn't feel like City Interactive tried to give you reasons to play one way over another. Even the Nazi Eagle collectibles scattered throughout Europe don't offer any tangible payoff, let alone any of the expository factoids that you usually get from these kinds of items.

Enemy Front isn't among the best-looking shooters out there, or the most memorable.

Enemy Front could still have been an appealing and straightforward Nazi whack-a-mole game if not for its hot mess of glitches and poor design choices. It greatly suffers from frequent split-second freezes, often during crucial moments, such as when you switch to your scope or perform a melee kill. When allies accidentally complete objectives for you (for example, killing key generals), these accomplishments do not count toward your progress. This locks you from advancing, forcing you to reload the last checkpoint.

Since the multiplayer lacks the background bedlam of planes flying by or mortar shells hitting every couple of seconds, it's unsurprising that it plays more fluidly than the campaign. While the modest selection of maps are sufficiently large and multileveled, the uninspired deathmatch and conquest modes offer nothing that you can't find in other shooters. It also doesn't help that weapons always respawn in the exact same locations. The fun is gone once everyone knows to make a break for the rocket-launching panzerschreck.

Enemy Front lands in that unfortunate middle area where its faults aren't bad enough to leave a painfully lasting negative impression, but its key moments are too generic to be memorable. At a party 10 years from now, I'll suddenly recall the V2 rocket sabotage mission or the Warsaw siege chapter, yet I will have forgotten what game these scenes were from. It will drive me mad for the rest of the night, since it's unlikely anyone will pop up and say, "You're thinking about Enemy Front." And even if someone did chime in with the correct answer, I might not be convinced it was that game. That's the impression Enemy Front makes.
Tue, 17 Jun 2014 12:43:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/enemy-front-review/1900-6415792/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/resident-evil-s-next-movie-may-be-its-last-tentatively-titled-the-final-chapter/1100-6420545/

Resident Evil: Retribution

Writing has begun on the sixth entry in the Resident Evil film series, but as its tentative title--Resident Evil: The Final Chapter--suggests, it might turn out to be the last, according to writer and director Paul W.S. Anderson.

Speaking with Collider, Anderson revealed that The Final Chapter is the title he's currently using as he writes the upcoming film's script. The title has not yet been finalized but could end up being used, as he said, "It may be the final title, but that's what's written on the front page of my script." Asked whether he's writing this with the intention of making it the series' final film, he said, "That's what's on the title page, it's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, so absolutely."

Of course, as with video games, the movie industry is hesitant to let a franchise die when it's still making money. And the Resident Evil movies, whatever the consensus might be on their quality or merit, have made money: The most recent film, 2012's Retribution, grossed $240 million worldwide, the bulk of which was made overseas. Its predecessor, Afterlife, grossed nearly $300 million, but even with the decline, Retribution was still a moneymaker.

Anderson seems to be aware that continued success could derail plans for this movie to end the series. Referencing the Highlander movies, he said with a laugh, "As Christopher Lambert famously said, 'There can be only one.' And then there were five of them."

Although 3D may not be as popular as it once was, Anderson indicated earlier this year that the next Resident Evil movie would be available in 3D. In the interview with Collider, he talked about how it's important to begin considering 3D even in the writing stages. "You cannot make a great 3D movie by just--it's not some special sauce that you can sprinkle on," he said. "You make the dish and then you make hot sauce on top--it doesn't work well like that."

"I approach my films right from the inception, I kind of write action scenes and pick out locations that I think and know--because I've done so much of it--will translate very well into 3D," he said. "Then when we build the sets, we build sets that I know will shoot well in 3D. It's really, even from this point, 3D is something I'm definitely thinking about. And I think it's one of the things that people really appreciate about the movies that I'm involved with. Even if you don't like any other aspect of them, I think the one thing that most people do agree on is the 3D looks fantastic and that's really good news."

Anderson went on to say that he has been approached to work on movies based on other video game series, but he's been hesitant to do so. "I have been offered other video games themselves," he said. "I think because I'm probably so associated with Resident Evil, I think there's probably a reluctance to make another video game movie and I will also kind of feel that reluctance as well. That's the video game franchise I'm associated with right now and that's really what I want to do and put all of my energy into.

"And I'm very happy with the way I've managed to alternate between doing video game-based movie and then a historical-based movie or a piece of literature. I wouldn't want to do video game movie after video game movie."

As for the Resident Evil video games themselves, Resident Evil 7 is reportedly in the works, although Capcom has yet to make any official announcements.

Chris Pereira is a freelance writer for GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @TheSmokingManX

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? Most of this is straight profit, according to a profile of Kjellberg published in The Wall Street Journal.

Kjellberg, 24, created PewDiePie five years ago. In December of 2012, he signed a deal with online video content creator Maker Studios, which sold itself to media giant Disney just a few months ago.

He is best known for his funny videos that aren't video game reviews, but rather "Let's Play"-style programs where he plays a title and narrates his experience. In the past two weeks alone, he's posted more than two dozen videos featuring games like Among The Sleep and Next Car Game. With the exception of one video that went up today, all of these videos have attracted more than 2 million views.

Kjellberg admits that the kind of videos he's making are, in some ways, encouraging developers to create games that are not only fun to play, but to also watch others play. "It's cool to have this kind of influence, but at the same time it's kind of scary," Kjellberg said.

Before he rose to fame as a YouTube star, Kjellberg went to college in Gothenburg, Sweden, uploading videos during his spare time. He later dropped out of school and starting selling hot dogs instead.

Where did the name PewDiePie come from? Kjellberg says the original name for his YouTube account was PewDie ("pew" for the sound of a laser gun and "die" for death), but after he lost his account password he had to come up with a new name, so he added "Pie" to it.

His prominence on YouTube is somewhat unsettling, he said. "I'm so central to YouTube now, and that puts me in the spotlight and raises a lot of questions like 'Why is he so big?'" Kjellberg said. "I'd much rather prefer to have something like 5 million subscribers."

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma is aware of this concern and is consciously trying to avoid having it come up again in the future.

"When we created Skyward Sword, I really felt the need to make sure that everyone playing the game understood it," Aonuma told Kotaku. "But I also understand now, in hindsight, that when you go out and buy a game, you buy the game because you want to play it, and you don't want to have any obstacles in the way. And I guess it was received as a bit of an obstacle."

Last year's 3DS Zelda game, A Link Between Worlds, defied many series conventions, providing players with a great deal of freedom in how to go about their quest. It also didn't saddle players with a great deal of handholding that got in the way of playing, and it sounds as if future Zelda games will be more like that.

"In a game, it's when you get stuck, when you want that help," Aonuma continued. "And I kinda frontloaded all that in Skyward Sword, and it doesn't really help to get that information when you don't know what to do with it. So that was a real learning experience for me. So I'm going to be careful not to do that."

Nintendo unveiled its next Zelda game last week at E3. One thing that won't change in that game, though, is the protagonist: Despite some indications that the character seen in the trailer above was someone other than Link--possibly even a female--it is, in fact, Link.

Were you bothered by how tutorial heavy the opening hours of Skyward Sword were?

Heifer has created numerous donation levels, as well. Each donation tier is linked to a different animal. A purchase of $20 will give chicks to poor farmers, a $30 donation will give a hive of honey bees, and so on.

But the promotion is called "Games for Goats." There shouldn't be other animals offered, right? Coffee Stain's Armin Ibrisagic answers, "All animals are goats. Horses are goats with longer legs. Bears are goats with fur." And, of course, all of these varieties of "goat" are beneficial to people in need.

This is not the first time Coffee Stain Studios has used its game to promote a social cause. A recent update to Goat Simulator criticized Russian policies toward the gay and lesbian community.

It does not yet have a name and isn't expected out until next year, but the Wii U game will be an open-world one and has sparked a great deal of excitement for the series. One thing that won't change in that game, though, is the protagonist: Despite some indications that the character seen in the trailer above was someone other than Link--possibly even a female--it is, in fact, Link.

Were you bothered by how tutorial heavy the opening hours of Skyward Sword were?
