Higby made clear that players will not get nearly as many notifications normally, and that SOE disabled the system while it adjusts it "in order to reduce impact and prevent distraction from gameplay as much as possible."

However, Higby explained these notification will continue to appear (less often), and that increasing awareness of membership and marketplace offerings is better than other ways to support PlanetSide 2.

"As a free-to-play game, our servers are kept running by the support of a relatively small percentage of the player-base, and initiatives like this are critical to us being able to grow the percentage of players who are helping support the game," he said. Berkman said he's worried about Facebook collecting data, creating an "information monopoly," and the notion that today "companies exist and operate only to be acquired."

In his response, Carmack said that there is a case for being an independent company like Valve and trying to build a new virtual reality ecosystem like Steam from the ground up. Valve deserves all their success for having the vision and perseverance to see it through to the current state."

VR, Carmack argues, won't be like that. According to its website, it offers a 90 degrees field of view, 1080p OLED screen, and will support PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. The company said it talked to Epic Games, and that it would be really easy to support Unreal Engine 4, as well as CryEngine, Havok, and Unity. In addition, True Player Gear says it's currently working on positional tracking using onboard cameras, which in the future could also be used for augmented reality functionality.

True Player Gear will launch a Kickstarter in the next few months and hopes to raise a minimum of $500,000. If it succeeds, it hopes to ship Totem by Christmas. The company says that since Totem has hardware acceleration, cameras, and more, "it will cost just a little bit more than Oculus, but nothing outrageous." The Oculus Rift Development Kit will sell for $350.

"We didn't initially intend to make any announcement," the company said on Reddit. "But we feel that with the news of a corporation buying Oculus, who is focused on web applications and doesn't understand the hardware business like others do, we really need to come out of the woods and let everyone know that there is an alternative that is coming soon. We are in the last stretch of developing a final 5th gen prototype and are aiming to present a finished dev kit on Kickstarter in the next few months."

If you need to catch up with the biggest news of the week, make sure you read everything you need to know about Facebook buying Oculus for $2 billion.

Emanuel Maiberg is a freelance writer. "I don't think it's necessarily because free-to-play is a better form, though. It's more about people making a rash decision to switch over and chase a quick buck."

Yoshida explained that subscription-based route provides a stable flow of income that allows Square Enix to keep good developers on staff, who can update the game and make it better.

"The experience is too obviously powerful, and it makes converts on contact," he said. "The fairly rapid involvement of the Titans is inevitable, and the real questions were how deeply to partner, and with who."

He added that he didn't expect it to be this soon, that he didn't expect it to be Facebook, and that he could think of other, more obvious companies, but that he believes Facebook sees the "Big Picture."

"I wasn't personally involved in any of the negotiations," he said. "I spent an afternoon talking technology with Mark Zuckerberg, and the next week I find out that he bought Oculus."

In 2000, Carmack founded Armadillo Aerospace, a space tourism startup. On Twitter, Carmack also said that the Facebook deal probably means he'll give aerospace another shot, but not for several years.
